![]() The importance of open bibliographic repositories is widely accepted by the scientific community. ESPAS is open to all potential users interested in near-Earth space environment data, including those who are active in basic scientific research, technical or operational development and commercial applications. ![]() Therefore, ESPAS is committed to support and foster new data providers who wish to promote the easy use of their data and models by the research community via a central access framework. In order to facilitate efficient user queries ESPAS allows a highly flexible workflow scheme to select and request the desired data sets.ĮSPAS has the strategic goal of making Europe a leading player in the efficient use and dissemination of near-Earth space environment information offered by institutions, laboratories and research teams in Europe and worldwide, that are active in collecting, processing and distributing scientific data. Observation based and model enhanced scientific understanding of the physical state of the Earth's space environment and its evolution is critical to advancing space weather and space climate studies, two very active branches of current scientific research.ĮSPAS offers an interoperable data infrastructure that enables users to find, access, and exploit near-Earth space environment observations from ground-based and spaceborne instruments and data from relevant models, obtained from distributed repositories. To this end, ESPAS will serve as a central access hub for researchers who wish to exploit multi-instrument multipoint data for scientific discovery, model development and validation, and data assimilation, among others. Due to its maturity, D-NET can also be used by third-party organizations, not necessarily involved in the software design and maintenance.ĮSPAS provides an e-Infrastructure to support access to a wide range of archived observations and model derived data for the near-Earth space environment, extending from the Earth's middle atmosphere up to the outer radiation belts. Other solutions are available in the literature but focus on specific use-cases and therefore suffer from the limited re-use in different contexts. – D-NET is the first general-purpose framework of this kind. Its customizability and extendibility make D-NET a suitable candidate for creating aggregative infrastructures mediating between different scientific domains and therefore supporting multi-disciplinary research. D-NET is today adopted by several EC projects, national consortia and communities to create customized infrastructures under diverse application domains, and other organizations are enquiring for or are experimenting its adoption. – The D-NET software toolkit is a general-purpose service-oriented framework where designers can construct customized, robust, scalable, autonomic aggregative infrastructures in a cost-effective way. Finally, real-cases of D-NET are presented, to show-case the statement above. The D-NET architecture and services are presented, drawing a parallel with the ones of aggregative infrastructures. Finally, it proposes D-NET as an optimal solution for designers and developers willing to realize aggregative infrastructures. It then describes the limits of current solutions, which find their lacks in the realization and maintenance costs of such complex software. – The paper provides a definition of aggregative infrastructures, sketching architecture, and components, as inspired by real-case examples. Designers and developers can select from a variety of D-NET data management services, can configure them to handle data according to given data models, and can construct autonomic workflows to obtain personalized aggregative infrastructures. D-NET is a framework where designers and developers find the tools for constructing and operating aggregative infrastructures (systems for aggregating data sources with heterogeneous data models and technologies) in a cost-effective way. – The purpose of this paper is to present the architectural principles and the services of the D-NET software toolkit.
